A twitter follower of Blizzard Community Manager Micah Whiple asked whether or not Blizz planned on releasing Diablo 3 on consoles. Much to everyone’s absolute shock, Whiple simply gave the fan a “Yup,” and went on to confirm that Josh Mosqueira was filling the role of lead designer for the “Diablo console project.”

You can check Whiple’s entire tweet below.

Of course, this simple twitter exchange is far from an official press release, but I think it’s a safe bet that the game will be coming to consoles later this year. Which consoles Diablo will hit, on the other hand, is completely unknown. Presumably the Xbox 360 and PS3 will be scoring the highly anticipated title, though a Wii U edition is also a possibility.

The odd thing about Whiple’s statement is that he doesn’t confirm that it’s actually Diablo 3 that will be coming to consoles. We know that Diablo 3 Director, Jay Wilson, has stated that Diablo would be built from the ground up on consoles, so fans can likely expect a very different experience (and release date?) from the console versions than they’ll get in the PC edition.

It’s still unknown just exactly when Blizzard will be releasing Diablo 3 in any format, and after the rumored February release date was immediately shot down, we couldn’t possibly fathom a guess. However, it’s still allegedly on track to fulfill the needs of the masses early this year, so we’ll keep you updated with any word on an official release date.

Are you interested in playing Diablo 3 on console, or will you stick with the PC?

Diablo 3 is currently in development for PC and consoles.

[UPDATED]

Blizzard has released an official statement to Game Informer, stating that Bashiok’s twitter response was by no means an official confirmation for a console version of Diablo.

I think it’s pretty obvious that Blizzard is already hard at work on the console version of Diablo 3. I mean, they already have a lead designer for the console version, which sounds like Blizzard is doing a little more than “exploring the possibility” of bringing Diablo 3 to a gaming system near you.

“Our focus right now is on finishing the PC/Mac version of Diablo III and making sure it’s a worthwhile successor to the Diablo series.”
