Movies based on other childhood toys and memories have also done well at the box office recently, with movies like Transformers and G.I. Joe showing that big action spectacle movies can make serious money at the box office even if they are not ‘good’ films.
3D has also become a major cash-cow for Hollywood studios, which could be another reason why Universal wants to try to bring the franchise back to theaters. Yes, 3D video-game movies have not been that great either, but it’s easy to see why a studio might want to take a chance and give it a shot.
There is also the in-development Doom 4 game, and whether or not the movie and game launch at the same time, one could help raise brand awareness for the other. Doom hasn’t been in the public eye for quite some time, with the genre having made leaps and bounds since Doom 3.
Games like Bulletstorm looked to bring a new-yet-old arcade feel to the genre, while games like Gears of War 3 and Killzone 3 make the most of technological innovations by pushing graphical limits.
Doom is not the king of the FPS genre and anything that could get gamers interested in an aging franchise again might be a good idea. Sure, a bad movie likely won’t help, but there is a chance the Doom reboot could be good . . . right?
